In this project I have demonstrated my HTML skills (and the amazing Image-Mapping!) to create a webpage and hypertext essay. My approach in responding to the extract is to have a brief explanation on some aspects of blogging; mainly in relation to links and short post. I put more emphasize on the experience of hypertext; by using links to connect and separate content.

 Anyway, Jill, Hannah and I had been looking at each other’s project and tried to give constructive feedback as we built it. It’s really interesting to see how the three of us had very different approach on design, content and overall presentation of the project. I must say, compare to Hannah’s and Jill’s, mine is really simple.

 Hannah focuses a lot on the detailed explanation of all aspects of blogging, while Jill’s has a briefer explanation enhanced with other media other than text and images.

Mine? What about mine? In terms of content, I have a short brief content explaining some aspects of blogging. I concentrate more on the experience of creating a hypertext (using links to connect and separate content).

 Both of them had been commenting on my simple and elegant design & that makes me feel special!

Can’t wait til this is finished.

- Hypertext as a Collage.

I think in this digital age, almost everyone is involved in creating a hypertext — linking materials and making connection between them. There are a lot of web-server/web feed tools, such as Digg, Delicious tag,  that allows everyone to share links to friends and public in an instant.

Argh.

When I first looked at it, I felt slightly intimidated… Whatthehell? It needs coordinate? For sure you didn’t know I hate Maths with a passion.

Scouring the internet and asking a couple of helpful mate, I got this useful links.

 The most confusing part is when you have to change your Map to a dummy link, in order to get the coordinate (x1, y1, x2,y2). IIt takes a while to grasp the whole concept, but once you’ve got it. It’s easy peasy – I actually had fun with the coordinates.

Overall, I think I have put in a significant amount of effort in order for me to do well in Network Media. I attended all of the tute and some of the lecture. I always try to be updated and stay on track of all the topics we’re covering in each week. In terms of participation, I’m actively engaged in the class discussion and at times, help out some of other students when they are having some difficulties. I also have successfully completed all the task (assignments and in-class exercise). In completing my assignments (esp. my portfolio), I put in a lot of extra effort – which helped me to grasp the concept and skills I need to learn.

For the blog, I managed to maintain regular post throughout the course although I really have to push myself to be more time-efficient with instant publication. I also think that I have taken a proactive learning in this course, by being able to identify my mistakes, solving problems and improving my skills from there.

I visited other students’ blog and tried to draw ideas or different discussion from there – although unfortunately, I still hadn’t been able to post comment (due to the Old Blog vs. New Blog system).

Outside the class, I stay engaged with the things I’ve learnt in Network Media by relating materials outside the course and applying some skills I have learnt (e.g my own blog). While doing this course, I’ve also been able to participate in the medium more actively rather than just being a new-media consumer/Internet user.

My learning process was also helped by doing some study-session with some of my friends from other class to teach and helped out each other, especially when completing our portfolios. Sometimes, I decided to ‘crash’ Nate’s 3.30-5.30 class just because I feel that in the morning, I hadn’t been able to concentrate fully. :D

Things that I have learnt to do better:

I have definitely improved my HTML skills and general understanding of new media (the concept of hypertext, interwebs, digital copyright). I also learnt a lot of new things/skills related to blogging (which is relevant for me as I have an interest in the area of online journalism).

My overall understanding of various concept and theories have improved tremendously – I am now more familiar with elements of webdesign, blog ethics, sitemaps, etc.

Through this course, I am also encouraged to stay connected with things (technology, new media, online journalism, etc) that I rarely care about.

Things I could have done better:

Of course, there are a number of things that I could have done better. Although I’ve been learning proactively most of the time, I should have make more effort into exploring and trying out more things (such as CSS design, etc). I also should try to blog more on course-related content.

I should make more effort in engaging with the reading materials as I haven’t been able to do it thoroughly with the reading materials (basically because this semester’s workload is awful, awful, awful :| – but I’m surviving…)

With that, I’m going to give myself a High Distinction.
